Following revelations from former military ruler General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Rtd) regarding his role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election, which was rightfully won by Chief MKO Abiola, the Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) called for his immediate arrest and prosecution, arguing that impunity in governance must not go unchallenged.
In a widely published statement, CHRICED reaffirmed that the June 12, 1993 presidential election was regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election and remains a dark stain on the nation’s democratic history. Decades later, justice remains elusive, fueling demands from civil society groups for accountability and redress.
CHRICED noted that during a well-attended book launch where Babangida made his confession, top political figures collectively raised a staggering ₦17 billion in donations. CHRICED condemned this donation, criticizing the proposed presidential library as a mockery of justice and a blatant display of corruption.
It expressed outrage that instead of holding Babangida accountable for the political chaos, repression, and loss of lives following the annulment, the President and political elites were busy engaging in a “money rain” at the occasion.
