Distinguished resource persons, respected members of the media, courageous civil society leaders, partners in the struggle for justice, democracy, and accountability—on behalf of CHRICED, I welcome you all with deep gratitude and profound optimism to this two day workshop on Strengthening Media and CSOs for Electoral Integrity and Civic Space Protection in Nigeria.

We are here today not because it is easy, but because Nigeria demands it. Our democracy demands it. Our people—resilient, hopeful, and determined—demand it. And when the nation calls, those who believe in justice must rise without hesitation.

But before we go further, let me begin with a heartfelt appreciation. We extend our profound gratitude to Misereor KZE, Germany, whose unwavering financial support made this workshop possible. Their solidarity reminds us that the struggle for justice and democratic integrity is global. When partners across borders stand with us, our resolve becomes stronger, our voice becomes louder, and our impact becomes deeper. Misereor KZE has once again shown that they are not just donors—they are allies in the fight for a fair, just, and democratic Nigeria.

I also want to recognise and appreciate the CHRICED Board of Directors. Your guidance, your wisdom, and your steadfast commitment continue to steer this organisation with integrity and purpose. CHRICED stands tall today because our Board stands firm, principled, and unwavering in its dedication to the Nigerian people.

And to the CHRICED staff—each and every one of you—thank you. You worked tirelessly, day and night, to bring this workshop to life. You planned, coordinated, followed up, and ensured that every detail was in place. Your passion is the backbone of this organisation. Your commitment is the engine that drives our mission forward. Today’s gathering is a testament to your excellence.

To our distinguished resource persons and facilitators—thank you for honouring this invitation. Thank you for making time out of your demanding schedules to be here. Your expertise, your experience, and your courage enrich this space. You are not just speakers; you are frontline defenders of democracy, and your presence strengthens our collective resolve.

Now, look around this room. You will not see spectators. You will not see passive observers. You will see fighters—journalists who refuse to be silenced, activists who refuse to be intimidated, and civil society leaders who refuse to surrender Nigeria’s civic space to fear, manipulation, or authoritarian impulses.

We are here because electoral integrity is under pressure. We are here because civic space is shrinking. We are here because disinformation is poisoning public trust. We are here because political violence continues to threaten the very soul of our democracy.

But we are also here because we refuse to give up.

For too long, powerful interests have tried to weaken the media, divide civil society, and confuse citizens with lies. They want us afraid. They want us silent. They want us disconnected from one another.

But today, in this hall, we declare something different: We will not be silent. We will not be intimidated. We will not be divided.

This workshop is not just a training—it is a battleground of ideas, a rallying point for defenders of democracy, and a space where we sharpen our tools for the work ahead. Over the next two days, we will confront the hard truths about Nigeria’s electoral system. We will expose the gaps, challenge the injustices, and build strategies that strengthen our collective resistance.

We will learn how to protect civic space. We will learn how to counter disinformation. We will learn how to report ethically, courageously, and without fear. And most importantly, we will learn how to stand together—media and civil society—united in purpose and unshakeable in resolve.

Because when journalists and CSOs join forces, something powerful happens:

Communities become informed. Citizens become empowered. Democracy becomes stronger. And those who thrive on impunity begin to tremble.

So today, I ask you to bring your passion. Bring your anger at injustice. Bring your hope for a better Nigeria. Bring your determination to protect the civic space that belongs to all of us.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let us leave this workshop with fire in our hearts and clarity in our minds. Let us leave with a shared commitment to defend electoral integrity, amplify citizens’ voices, and build a Nigeria where truth is louder than propaganda, where justice is stronger than fear, and where every citizen—no matter their tribe, gender, or status—can participate freely and boldly in our democracy.
