As part of efforts to ensure the effective implementation of the Kano State Free Maternal and Child Health Care Law (FMNCH) 2023, CHRICED engaged key government stakeholders in Kano. These stakeholders include the Commissioner of Information, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya; the Commissioner for Public Procurement Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr. Nura Iro Ma’aji; and the Acting Permanent Secretary in Kano State Ministry of Planning and Budget, Mal. Ajumawa L.A.
During the engagement, CHRICED’s Senior Program Officer (SPO), Mr. Omoniyi Adewoye, urged the commissioners to leverage their offices to influence the implementation of the FMNCH law. He highlighted the law’s potential benefits in improving the overall well-being of mothers and children in Kano State and enhancing the state’s health indicators.
The visit resulted in several commitments from the stakeholders. Comrade Waiya pledged to present the issue before the State Executive Council to secure broader government backing. Mal. Ajumawa L.A. assured CHRICED of the ministry’s readiness to support implementation through planning and budgeting efforts. Dr. Ma’aji committed to working closely with the Commissioner for Health to drive the initiative forward.
A similar visit was made to the Kano State Ministry of Health to strengthen collaboration and ensure the effective implementation of the law. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Pharm. Aminu Bashir, received the CHRICED team. The SPO emphasized the law’s potential to significantly reduce maternal mortality and improve access to quality healthcare for vulnerable populations.
In response, Pharm. Bashir acknowledged maternal and child mortality as a pressing challenge and reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to partnering with organizations like CHRICED to drive impactful healthcare interventions. He also commended CHRICED for its continuous advocacy and dedication to ensuring that every mother and child receives the care they deserve.
