Corruption in Nigeria Customs Service: Urgent Call for Reform and Accountability

Amidst recent revelations of rampant corruption within the Nigeria Customs Service, the Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) took a bold step by hosting a press conference Professor Abubakar Momoh House in Abuja. Led by Executive Director Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, the conference aimed to alert Nigerians to the severity of the situation and its profound implications for the nation's emerging democracy.

Gearing Up for Second Phase of Anti-Corruption Project in Kano State

In anticipation of the forthcoming implementation of the second phase of its community-driven anti-corruption project in Kano State, CHRICED has commenced strategic engagements with key stakeholders. These stakeholders encompass the Kano State House of Assembly, alongside fellow MacArthur cohorts like Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) and Mambayya House, as well as prominent anti-corruption agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Brussels Think Tank Training Adventure

Representatives from the Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) recently participated in the esteemed School for Think Tankers training program, held from January 28th to February 3rd, 2024. Dr. Zikirullahi M. Ibrahim, Omoniyi Adewoye, and Isiaka Furera represented CHRICED at the event, which took place in collaboration with Bruegel in Brussels.

Alleged Senate Budget Padding Sparks Calls for Forensic Audit of Constituency Project Budgetary Allocations

In response to allegations of Senate budget padding, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called for a swift forensic audit of constituency project budgetary allocations. The allegations, brought forward by Senator Abdul Ningi, highlight a concerning trend of corruption within Nigeria's legislative processes.

We're thrilled to welcome new additions to our team at CHRICED! Meet Princess Aiyede, our latest volunteer. She is a seasoned media professional with over 12 years of experience, specializing in pidgin news casting and broadcasting. Alongside her career, she actively engages in humanitarian work, driven by a passion for social causes. With a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, she aspires to contribute to Nigeria's development. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, watching movies, dancing, and cherishes time spent with family. She describes herself as an introvert, a food lover, and embraces life's opportunities with zest.

CHRICED staff represent the organization in various events

CHRICED’s Program Communications Officer, Furera Isiaka, attended the Kano Education Summit 2024 organized by Adolescent Health and Information Projects (AHIP). The summit, held on February 20th and 21st at the Tahir Guest Palace in Nasarawa GRA, Kano State, focused on advancing girls' education retention and completion. Organized by AHIP and Christian Aid Nigeria in collaboration with various partners, the event aimed to address challenges hindering girls' education in the region. Distinguished speakers and stakeholders emphasized the importance of policy implementation, cultural awareness, community engagement, and technological advancement in improving girls' access to education. The summit concluded with the development of a comprehensive framework for education reform in Kano State, representing a significant step towards achieving educational equity and excellence in the region.

Muhammad Yusuf Musa, CHRICED MEL Officer, attended a Capacity Building Workshop for Media & Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the Launch of the Campaign on Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) organized by Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) and African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD), with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The workshop aimed to enhance understanding of SDRs among African stakeholders, addressing their implications and mechanics. Presentations covered topics such as SDR utilization in Nigeria and oversight of SDR and debt financing. The event underscored the need for inclusive utilization of SDR allocations, particularly focusing on gender and youth dimensions. Facilitated by Dr. Terfa Abraham, the workshop concluded with the launch of the SDR campaign in Abuja.

Muhammad Nazeer Idris, CHRICED's Assistant Program Officer, participated in the EU-ACT program closure in Kano State on February 27, 2024. This event served as a platform to reflect on the achievements, challenges, and insights garnered over the program's five-year duration. With support from the European Union, the Agents for Citizen-driven Transformation (ACT) Programme worked alongside civil society organisations (CSOs) to empower them as catalysts for sustainable development in Nigeria. The gathering brought together stakeholders, including CSOs, CBOs, government officials, and development partners, to evaluate the program's impact. Highlights included presentations detailing outcomes, panel discussions on key learnings, and testimonials from beneficiaries. Participants actively engaged in discussions and committed to sustaining the program's impact beyond its closure. Overall, the event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts and capacity-building initiatives in advancing sustainable development and strengthening civil society in Kano State

We bid Farewell to an esteemed Colleague

Mr. Armsfree Ajanaku, our Programs and Communication Manager at CHRICED leaves to pursue academic interests in development communications and information disorder. Effective February 29, 2024, Mr. Omoniyi Adeyemi Adewoye will steps in on an interim basis. We express our gratitude to Mr. Ajanaku for his invaluable contributions and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
